Linux #Week13

 Hello!

This week I will be writing about Linux and specifically two of it's distributions. But first of all, let's look at the main idea of Linux:

"Linux is similar to other operating systems you may have used before, such as Windows, macOS (formerly OS X), or iOS. Like other operating systems, Linux has a graphical interface, and the same types of software you are accustomed to, such as word processors, photo editors, video editors, and so on. In many cases, a software’s creator may have made a Linux version of the same program you use on other systems. In short: if you can use a computer or other electronic device, you can use Linux. But Linux also is different from other operating systems in many important ways. First, and perhaps most importantly, Linux is open source software. The code used to create Linux is free and available to the public to view, edit, and—for users with the appropriate skills—to contribute to."

But I will be comparing 2 distributions and to make things interesting I choose ones that might be completely different. One of them is GNew Sense and second one is Red Star OS

Let's start by comparing their names:

  • GNew Sense- I mean it sounds pretty cool and kind of reminds of new movement or something
  • Red Star OS- if your first thought was about one specific country in North then you are right....
Overall idea:
  • The GNew Sense is perfect for those who hate trademarks and copyrights. This distro is designed to remove all licensed and proprietary additions. It has all the software that's not open-source removed, starting from OS kernel to individual programs. "To use free software is to make political and ethical choice asserting your rights to learn and to share what you learn with others".
  • Red Star OS as you maybe have already guessed is the official operating system of North Korea. It is specifically designed with built-in content filtering due to strict government censorship. It is Linux based but has implemented closed system for network access and individual programs.

Some more things:

  • GNew Sense-The "Universe" package repository is enabled by default. It's limitations is the main thing about this distro-it contains only free software so support for some hardware that requires firmware and some freeware has no free option (wireless network card) so it is not available. Also some reviews state that this distro forces you to use only free software and in some way goes against it's main idea.
  • Red Star OS-This one is "closed source" and some of it's features include automatically watermark media files, it will automatically delete "inappropriate" files and block access to major segments of global internet. There is a warning about using this distro as it sends all the data to DPRK central system about what you are doing, where are you and many other things.
I think these two distros sows how many different things you can do with Linux, you just have to choose what's right for you.

Also wanted to mention one more distro-Blag. As a bit Russian speaking person this made me to laugh a bit :D
