Copyleft

Hello!

This week we will continue to discuss copyright issue. Only if last week I mentioned copyright, then this week everything will be about copyleft and things to maybe consider when choosing software's.

Let's start with discussing the difference between copyright and copyleft:

Copyright exists to protect authors or software's from unauthorized copying or selling of their work, and it means that only with author's permission can some of these actions be done.

However, copyleft can be modified and published if it remains free.

So the main differences are that copyleft should be free and it can be modified, but all the modified versions also need to be free, but there are 3 types of copyleft:

Strong copyleft- it means that all projects made with this licence demands that they must retain the license of original and they can't be made closed source. For example GNU GPL.

Weak Copyleft - using this you also have to retain the license but in some cases you can link your project with closed-source systems. For example if you are making some sort of software library, then the new software won't dictated by copyleft library.

No copyleft - the software using this license should remain free but it is possible to "get out" from it closed-source applications.

Now if you are thinking that this all is one big mess and you don't know what to choose, think about how much freedom or independence you want for your project. If you need a licence for end user then you should think about strong copyleft. But if you want to get the most of freedom that's possible you should go with no copyleft, but always do your research and really think about future.
