Old to New #week 3

 Hello there!

This week I will be talking about the inevitable death of newspaper and success of online journalism, and maybe why it wasn't such a good idea. I think I will mostly make it as a comparison between the old and new.

 

Without any further ado let's start:

As we know newspapers date back centuries ago, but only not so long ago (around 1980's) they received newer and "better" version - online journalism. Although it is easier to just open google and get thousands of articles about topic you are looking for, paper had it's magic too. Usually when buying newspaper a person knew that he can trust this outlet and the integrity of news he is reading, but on internet everyone could have written it, and there are so many twisted stories that you just can't know which is the real one. One more thing why it would be nice to keep some paper based newspapers would be that we are already spending so much time in front of a screen that reading something other than screen would really benefit our health. 

 

So what about online journalism and why it is a double-edged sword:

Being accessible anywhere and in unlimited amount is the biggest advantage of online news articles but it's the truth in them that can be really questioned. As I mentioned previously when news was in limited amount it was easier to understand what is true and what is not, but now it's the same "everyone can write something on internet" and if some of the news forums take "celebrity" rumours as trusted source then you can see where I'm going. But then again, I have to argue with myself that some specific sociality groups now have a chance to express themselves and show their stories, and that's maybe something that wasn't allowed to be printed previously. 

 

I think I could go on and on about things that are advantage and disadvantage at the same time, but I think the important thing is that don't forget to check the sources of news you are reading, always keep open mind and base your opinion on sources you truly know that you can trust. And don't forget that Internet is a dangerous/ weird place.

 Hello!      Today in my last post I will be talking about a specific ethical theory and how I see it implemented in IT. Theory that I chose is Social Contract Theory  by Michael J. Quinn (Firstly by Thomas Hobbes) and it goes like this: "the society should strive to develop a set of rules that make sense to everyone (making people follow them voluntarily). Disabilities and computers #Week 14

       Today I will be talking about something that I have found to be fascinating ever since I was a kid, and that is how people can adapt to certain (body) restrictions. I think the first time I started to think about how people with disabilities or those who are handicap did everyday tasks was when I saw a video on the news of woman knitting with her feet. And it just seemed so interesting and fascinating because I can never imagine doing something like that.     And one part of everyday tasks is working with computer, which for people who don't have arms could be quite challenging.
